Three Exams are Now Required for Rater Certification
During your HERS Rater training, students will take 3 RESNET exams under the supervision of a rater trainer as required by RESNET. The exams include a 55-question multiple-choice National Rater Exam, a ResCAZ Combustion Safety Practical Exam, and a RESNET HERS Practical Simulation Exam. All exams are open book and have a two- hour time limit. A passing score is 73% for the National Rater Exam, 85% for the Combustion Safety Practical, and 73% for the Practical Simulation Exam. Exam takers receive the results from the exam immediately after completing the exam.
1) National Rater Exam
The National Rater Exam covers the material presented during the training class as well as technical material on basic building science that is outside of the material covered in class. There is a $125 fee to take the exam, which is included in your NEHERS training fee. 2) Combustion Safety and Workscope Practical 'Field' Exam (ResCaz Practical)
This exam tests knowledge on combustion safety and work scope. The practical exam is delivered over the internet via 3-D Interactive Simulation. All candidates will receive complimentary access for 1 year to a training simulation program called RESCAZ prior to taking the exam. There is a $199 fee to take this exam, which is included in your training fee.
3) RESNET HERS Practical Simulation Exam
This exam requires candidates to correctly demonstrate their knowledge of field testing two homes.The Practical exam is delivered over the internet via a 3-D Interactive Simulation. All candidates will receive complimentary access to a training simulation program prior to taking the exam. There is a $200 fee to take this exam, which is included in your training fee.

All exams are administered by a trainer at the end of a rater training class. The exams can also be taken through a qualified local proctor to fulfill Professional Development requirements, or if the test was failed the first time. CAZ tests can also be taken for the first time through a qualified proctor by Raters who are also certified BPI analysts. All exams are "open book," and therefore exam-takers are encouraged to bring books/resources, calculator, etc. to the exam with them. Although the exam is taken while logged in to the Internet, no email or text messaging is allowed during the exam.
