Why NEHERS?

Quality First- The Alliance is pleased to offer high quality HERS rater training classes in the Northeast, approximately 3-4 times per year. We offer a comprehensive package that includes everything a student needs to be well prepared to become a HERS rater. Our hybrid HERS rater training classes include an online and a classroom/field component. The online component includes all of the building science theory and the classroom/field component includes all of the hands-on practical training and testing necessary to pass the HERS rater exams. HERS rater training is the first step towards Rater Certification. To learn more about the requirements for certification click here. Both online and classroom components are required for Rater Certification.

We Care About Service, Not Making a Profit - We are a non-profit organization whose only mission is to support the HERS industry in the Northeast. We are run by a volunteer Board made up of Raters, Providers and Program administrators who give their time because they are truly passionate about the importance of home performance and energy efficiency.

Regional Expertise - Our training is focused on the climate considerations specific to the Northeast. Our Trainers are raters who work in this market. Our competitors are Nationally-based companies and may not cover all those situations that are commonly encountered by rating professionals in the Northeast.

Realistic Expectations - Students often comment is that there is too much material to master in a short period of time. It is extremely difficult to cram this material into 40 hours, as some of our competitors do. NEHERS gives our students more time to digest the material for a less stressful and manageable learning experience, with a higher chance of success. We also now offer half of our training online. Therefore our students have less travel, and get to learn in a more comfortable environment.

NEHERS Training and Reference Manual- Authored and reviewed by some of the top HERS technical professionals in the country, it can be used in combination with any HERS software, and currently includes specific references to REM/Rate. In addition to thorough coverage of rating technical issues, the Manual also covers rater policies, codes of ethics and quality assurance. Although written for the Northeast U.S., the Manual is applicable to anywhere there is a HERS service. Our manual is updated annually and is included with your registration ($100 value).

NEHERS Associate Membership- Also included with your registration is an associate membership to the NEHERS Alliance ($50 value). In addition to the Benefits for All Members, associate members may also run and vote for an Associate Board Representative and have access to a career development resource and information base.

Representation of Rater Interests to RESNET- Our Standards Committee meets regularly to review RESNET Standards and to provide feedback to RESNET on changes to the standards.

Student Support - Our administrative staff and trainers are available to answer student questions before, during, and after the training. We don’t abandon you once the training is over. Certification takes more than just training, and NEHERS is there to help you every step of the way.
