About the Role: 

Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) is looking for an entry level Passive House (PH) Field Verifier to join our High Performance Building Solutions (HPBS) team.  In this role, you will support evaluating and verifying projects designed or built to meet the PH standard.  This role includes collaborating with construction teams, architects, and engineers to ensure compliance.  The ideal candidate has a strong interest in sustainable building practices, a desire to develop expertise in PH certification, and strong communication skills for both fieldwork and progress reporting. Certified professionals in International or US PH standards are invited to apply.

The proposed annual salary range for this position is $65,000 - $75,000 based on a 40-hour work schedule. The final salary may vary depending on confirmed job-related skills and experience.

Primary Responsibilities:  The role requires a self-starter able to work independently both in a group environment and in the field.

  • Assist in the verification of Passive House projects to ensure compliance with the Passive House standard, including construction site observations, performance testing, and documentation review.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to assess construction quality and adherence to Passive House guidelines with close attention to detail. Report findings and recommend corrective actions as needed.
  • Review project documentation, including drawings and specifications, for compliance with Passive House standards.
  • Perform basic calculations and measurements.
  • Prepare reports and documentation for PH certification.
  • Collaborate with project teams, architects, engineers, and contractors to address any issues related to Passive House certification and provide technical support.
  • Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities to stay current with Passive House standards, methodologies, and best practices

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Below is a list of the minimum requirements for the position.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, sustainable construction management or related degree with an emphasis on buildings and their operational systems. 
  • Relevant coursework, internships, academic projects or certifications related to sustainable building practices and energy efficiency is advantageous.   
  • 0-2 years of experience with building projects in North America. 
  • Comprehensive understanding of energy use in buildings.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and proficiency in MS Office Suite. 
  • Testing experience using blower door, duct blaster, and infrared camera equipment is a plus. 

Preferred knowledge:

  • Experience working on Passive House projects is a plus.
  • Previous rating experience as a HERS Rater, LEED Homes Green Rater and/or NGBS Green Verifier, or other credential demonstrating mastery of high-performance building strategies.
  • Willingness and ability to obtain applicable certifications through PHI, PHIUS, and/or ENERGY STAR Multifamily New Construction within 1 year of employment.

Required technical skills / certifications: 

  • Experience field verifying buildings, especially for green certifications or code compliance is a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and is frequently required to walk; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is often required to stand while at project sites. The employee may be required to lift or move objects up to 35 pounds.

There will be occasional long days on construction sites for performance testing (e.g. blower door) which can be physically demanding.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

TRAVEL REQUIRED:

Occasional overnight travel may be required (Less than 10%). Frequent local field visits in the NYC Metro area will be necessary (estimated at 40%-60%).

A valid and clean U.S. driving license is required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

This role involves a combination of office and fieldwork; however, most duties will be conducted in a construction/field environment, which will involve trips to projects sites for observation and training.  The remainder of the duties will be performed in an office environment.
