Propane Fireplaces

Hello,

I have a project where the customer is going to heat the home primarily with air source heat pumps, but they want a propane fireplace. The propane fireplace isn't designed to contribute to the heating, but it would be there for backup and or ambiance. I'm trying to determine if they need to get to a HERS 52 because they plan to install this system or can I justify a HERS 55 because the primary heat source is electric? They do plan to use a heat pump water heater. I'm not sure what they plan to use for a cooking fuel yet and if that matters for code compliance.

Thank you,

Re: Propane Fireplaces

Hi Dan,

Sorry for the delay.  We have a HERS class going on at the moment.  Also, I'm not a codes expert and so I'm had to reach out to some of the codes people here at PSD.  What they told me is that the fireplace makes it mixed fuel.  But as always, with any codes question...confirm with your local authority having jurisdiction.
