About Abode Energy Management

Abode Energy Management (Abode) is a Massachusetts-based energy management and consulting company with expertise in residential building science, energy efficiency, and strategic electrification.  Our collective experience in building performance, utility program implementation, community engagement, and workforce development form the foundation that enables us to deliver data-driven results for our partners, clients, and their customers. We are passionate about helping our industry succeed through a training-based, collaborative approach and are committed to building a nimble business that objectively serves all stakeholders with a focus on accountability, integrity, respect, and open communication.

Abode is focused on broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the energy sector. We are committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive.

Summary/Objectives:

Building on a strong foundation of ensuring quality delivery of utility-sponsored energy efficiency services to residential customers, Abode is currently expanding its product/service offerings to help customers and contractors move forward on a more holistic range of decarbonization strategies, including heat pumps.  Using processes and tools developed by Abode, the Residential Decarbonization Advisor will provide virtual consultations to residential customers to help them evaluate and move forward with energy efficiency and decarbonization solutions, with an initial focus on utilizing heat pumps to meet heating/cooling needs.  The Residential Decarbonization Advisor will also meet regularly in the field with manufacturers, distributors, and contractors to help spread the word about utility rebates and other incentives.  This is a terrific opportunity for someone adept at translating technical jargon into actionable, useful advice to help realize the climate impacts of electrification.

Position Responsibilities:

Reporting initially to Abode’s Senior Program Manager, this position will include some or all of the following responsibilities:

  • Learn about and stay current with recommended system design and installation standards

The Residential Decarbonization Advisor will stay current with evolving standards for the recommended design and installation of decarbonization systems such as heat pumps, so as to be in a position to provide fact-based, useful advice to homeowners and contractors.

  • Provide virtual consultations to residential customers considering decarbonization solutions, with an initial focus on heat pumps

The Residential Decarbonization Advisor will consult virtually with residential customers to help them evaluate decarbonization strategies such as heat pumps.  The Advisor will help homeowners understand the capabilities and limitations of this technology based on their home’s attributes and their goals for considering such systems.  Consultations may range from helping people to understand the basic pro’s and con’s inherent to such systems all the way to helping them better understand how to size, design, and install such systems so as to maximize their benefits.

  • Engage with heat pump manufacturers, distributors, and contractors

The Residential Decarbonization Advisor will meet up to one to two days per week in the field  with companies involved in manufacturing, distributing and installing heat pumps, both to provide them with information about related utility programs and incentives, as well as to learn more about industry needs.  As appropriate, the Residential Decarbonization Advisor may work to help troubleshoot issues that arise on particular projects.

  • Expand decarbonization solution offerings as programs evolve and customer awareness increases

The Residential Decarbonization Advisor will use lessons learned through their work with customers and contractors to help improve the services Abode offers in this relatively new marketplace.  This may include refining, evaluating, or helping to pilot new processes and tools to help make such consultations as efficient and impactful as possible to homeowners, contractors, and utilities.

Qualifications:

Strong candidates for this position will bring most, if not all, of the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated aptitude for learning industry jargon and technical content and translating it into clear, concise, digestible information.
  • Previous experience in an advisory, educational, or customer service role providing repeated advice or customer service to residential customers.
  • Strong technical expertise in residential building science and energy efficiency.   Experience with system design and installation for heat pumps would be ideal.
  • Familiarity with navigating government or utility incentive programs.
  • Previous experience working with home improvement contractors.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills; both 1:1 and in making presentations to groups
  • Demonstrated aptitude working with software such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and Salesforce.
  • Calm, even temperament suited to meeting people with different needs and backgrounds where they are.
  • Adaptable, flexible, collaborative team player that brings a positive can-do attitude.
  • A self-starter, able to proactively manage competing demands and changing schedules to complete tasks in a timely and diligent manner.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position with a starting annual base salary of $60 to $70K plus a bonus.
  • The Residential Decarbonization Advisor will work primarily out of the employee’s home office in CT or MA.  The employee will use their own vehicle (reimbursed for mileage by Abode) to pay visits to industry partners.
  • Abode offers its employees a competitive benefits package including Medical, Dental, Vision, Life and Disability Insurance, a matching 401k, and Paid Parental Leave.  Employees have a flexible working schedule and generous paid time off.
